Pragmatic Play: Game Families and Common Features

Why game families matter to newcomers

A large slot catalogue can look like hundreds of unrelated games. In practice, many studios organise their releases into families: a successful original is followed by sequels, themed editions and variants that keep the core idea and change one or two parts of it. Knowing which family a game belongs to is the quickest way to understand it, because most of what you learned from one title still applies to the next.

Pragmatic Play is a useful example because its families are easy to recognise from the names alone. This guide sets out what the studio says about itself, which series it currently features, and how to read a series name before opening a new release. For a general method that works with any studio, see our guide on how to compare games within a slot series.

What Pragmatic Play says about itself

On its own website, Pragmatic Play describes itself as a leading supplier of player-favourite content to the most successful operator brands in the industry. Its product areas include slots, live casino, Drops & Wins promotions, jackpots, crash games and arcade games. For slots specifically, the studio states a portfolio of over 500 games and says it is certified or licensed in over 30 jurisdictions.

Those are the studio's own statements, and we report them as such. They tell you about scale, not about any individual game: a large catalogue means the same mechanic often appears in several places, which is exactly why families are worth learning.

The families the studio puts forward

The titles featured on Pragmatic Play's site show several families at once:

  • Gates of Olympus, with Gates of Olympus 2500 and Gates of Olympus Super Scatter.
  • Sweet Bonanza, with Sweet Bonanza Super Scatter and Sweet Bonanza CandyLand.
  • Sugar Rush, represented by Sugar Rush 1000.
  • Big Bass, represented by Big Bass Bonanza 1000.
  • Starlight Princess, represented by Starlight Princess Super Scatter.
  • The Dog House, represented by The Dog House Megaways.

The pattern is visible straight away: a family name followed by a suffix. The suffix signals a variant, but it does not explain itself. We deliberately do not guess what each suffix changes in each game; the paytable of the specific title is the only reliable place to find out.

Reading a family over time: the Big Bass example

The Big Bass family shows how a series develops. Pragmatic Play announced the original Big Bass Bonanza on 14 December 2020 as a 5x3 fishing slot. On 17 September 2021 it announced Bigger Bass Bonanza, describing it as a continuation of its predecessor with an extended set of reels. The studio's site now features Big Bass Bonanza 1000, showing that the family has continued well beyond the first two titles.

For a newcomer, that history suggests a sensible order of reading: learn the original first, then see what each later title changes. Our Big Bass Bonanza overview and bonus-round explainer cover the original, and our comparison of the first two releases shows what the sequel altered.

A practical checklist for a new release in a family

When a new title appears in a family you already know, a short checklist keeps the comparison honest:

  1. Name the original. Identify which earlier game the new one builds on.
  2. Compare the layout. A change of grid size or the way wins are counted changes the feel of every spin.
  3. Compare the feature rules. Check how the bonus is triggered and what happens inside it.
  4. Read stated figures carefully. Maximum-win statements and return-to-player figures are only meaningful for the exact version shown.
  5. Try the official demo where one exists. A demo shows the rules in action without any money at stake.

Our providers section collects guides that apply this checklist to other studios.

Summary

Pragmatic Play presents itself as a large supplier with over 500 slots, and it organises much of that catalogue into recognisable families such as Big Bass, Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza. Treat the family name as a starting point and the suffix as a prompt to check the paytable. Learning one original thoroughly makes every later title in its family quicker to understand, but nothing about a family changes the odds of any individual game.
